Wow.  A Nobel Prize!

I am pretty sure I told you that I had hoped to win one of those when I was a tyke.  Until I found out that engineers aren’t the ones who get them.  These awards are for the “pure” sciences, not for the folks that convert those cold hard facts into useful items.  Enough grousing.Non-A, Non-B Hepatitis

Over and Over and Over Again

It’s that time of year.  The granting of the MacArthur awards and the Nobel Prizes.  Which included 3 guys who were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for advancing the state of the art when it comes to circadian rhythms.  And, the awardees didn’t devote their work solely to humans, but animals and plants, as well.  (Amazingly, circadian rhythms affect disease susceptibility, growth rates- even the size of fruits that are grown.)

Stem Cell Hopes

There’s been all kinds of controversy with stem cells. Not that they are or are not safe, but because virtually the entire science has been engulfed by the “Right to Life” movement and their anti-abortion crusades. Which means that ill patients are being deprived of the potential for treatment via stem-cell derived solutions.  Which makes this news very interesting.

Wait- this really is cool!

I know.   If I mention engineering, science, or economics, then your eyes glaze over.  But, these things are important- it’s how we make things, how we solve problems, and how we run our companies and our country.  (OK, the politicians are making those last two things a little problematic.)

We were wrong!

I was a man on a mission.  I “learned” early on that, if you wanted to make a name for yourself in science or engineering, you had to get it well on the road by the time you were 30.  It was never clear if the home pressures were the issue or the fact that one would be immersed in an educational environment at those ages that made this possible.   Whatever it was, even Albert Einstein bought into this by proclaiming:  “A person who has not made his great contribution to science before the age of 30 will never do so.”

Women Rule The World

A guest post by Ryan M. Rivera, who requested to share this piece with you.

Gone are the days when women’s role is limited to being a homemaker. Thanks to the brave people who pioneered the waves of feminist movements in the past decades, women have attained great empowerment, and they are now given respect and proper treatment. Gone are the days when women are inferior to men. Now, equal rights are given to both sexes. One is neither dominant nor inferior to the other.
