The second day of the holiday (today) is  the 26th anniversary (called a Yahrzeit) of the death of my mom.

Tonight begins a new moon.  In my religion, that means it is a new month (called Rosh Chodesh), and this one is Elul.  This new moon crosses two days..   The first day, (the one starting tonight) is the 20th anniversary of the death of my mom.  This anniversary is called a Yahrzeit.  The second day of the new moon of Elul is anniversary of my daughter’s bat mitzva- and tomorrow happens to be her secular birthday, to boot.

Holding On

Solar. Lunar. Lunisolar.  The three major calendars nowadays.  The Julian calendar (the solar calendar) is probably the one hanging on your wall.  The Moslem faith follows a lunar calendar, which is why Ramadan seems to happen in any season, since the lunar year is shorter than the solar one.  My calendar, the Hebrew calendar, is lunisolar.  That way the holiday of Spring stays in Spring; the holiday of Sukot, that harbingers the rainy season is situated properly.
