Today begins a new Jewish month- the month of Elul. (Actually, it is the last day of Av- but it is a new moon, one that traverses two days. So, the last day of Av and the first day of Elul are celebration as the new moon days.. Also, Elul begins our introspection and review of our lives- so we are ready for the next holidays- The Days of Awe- Rosh Hashana and Yom Kipur (which are in the month of Tishrei).

It’s Rosh Chodesh
There was no moon last night, which means today is the first day of Rosh Chodesh. In particular, last night and today are the Rosh Chodesh of Sh’vat.
Rosh Chodesh Elul (this time it’s the First of Elul)
This is the second day of Rosh Chodesh Elul, a minor holiday. The first (yesterday) was the anniversary of my eldest daughter’s bat mitzva. (I won’t say how many years!) Mazel tov, Shosh! The second day of the holiday (today) is the 23th anniversary (called a Yahrzeit) of the death of my mom.
