49, 50!

We’ve been counting the days since the Pesach (Passover) Seder.   50 days after we were freed from Egypt (Mitzrayim- a place of narrow straits);  we have been  anticipating a major event at the foot of Mount Sinai.   (Sorry- Mount Sinai is really NOT found within the “Sinai Peninsula”, more likely it’s part of Saudi Arabia, near an active volcano.)  We were asked if we would accept the laws of the Supreme Being- to which our reply was “we will do and we will adhere”.  Obviously, that was easier said than performed, because we’ve often failed to follow the 613 mitzvot- and some of us even fail the 10 Commandments.

Ga Ga Goo

I admit it. It’s been years since I had a little baby around routinely. That doesn’t mean I don’t recall how it was when those first few words and sounds emanated from my precious child’s mouth. (It was the same feelings with my grandson, of course.) And, there are tons of babies who come into “my” coffee shop, where I am the surrogate grandpa.

We’ve gotten it…The Tora!

No Gravatar

We’ve been counting since the Pesach (Passover) Seder.   50 days after we were freed from Egypt (Mitzrayim- a place of narrow straits), we were waiting by Mount Sinai to receive the Tora.   Sorry, folks, this was more likely NOT in the “Sinai Peninsula”, but found in Saudi Arabia, near an active volcano. As I wrote yesterday, we saw AND heard the words of the Supreme Being (you can get the idea by studying this rocket plant explosion in Henderson, Nevada).

A speech to remember

No Gravatar

So, I told you that I attended my son’s graduation from the University of Michigan. (Of course, I did. Wild horses, a hurricane, or even a tornado would not have kept me from it.) And, I had the opportunity to hear one of the best graduation speeches ever. (I’m not inexperienced in this matter; a rough count is that I have heard- nay, endured- some 45 or so of these colloquys.)

Shvuot- the Feast of Weeks.

We’ve been counting since the Pesach (Passover) Seder.   50 days after we were freed from Egypt (Mitzrayim- a place of narrow straits), we were waiting by Mount Sinai (sorry- NOT in the “Sinai Peninsula”, more likely in Saudi Arabia, near an active volcano), to receive the 10 Commandments. Where the words were seen- yes, seen. I admit, until I saw the effects of a rocket plant explosion in Henderson, Nevada, I had no idea you really could see “sound”.  Not surprising that those in attendance were totally awed…

What are YOU thinking?

So, I’ve been writing for a while about brain research. And, how some (a lot?) is being used to determine criminal behavior. Lie detection (here and here, among others- check out lie detect on the index) and legal/criminal thought and action are among the most insidious applications. Today, I will talk about one that has a benign application- except for what it really means. I guess that means you have to read this post to the end.

Children with autism have more connections between the hemispheres and within the frontal lobe

No Gravatar

We talked about the brain scan that was developed to detect autism in adults. Brain scans in children that carry an autism gene (CNTNAP2) are now providing very interesting results.  [PLEASE NOTE: Many people (about 1/3 the population) have this gene variant- without demonstrating the characteristics of autism.  The presence of this gene indicates the subject is at risk for autism.] There seems to be more connections among neurons in the frontal lobe.
