Today is the first day of the new month of Kislev. (It is actually the second day of the Rosh Chodesh [new moon] celebration, but that’s a talk for another day.) Which means that 24 days from today, we Jews will begin our holiday of Chanuka, the celebration of lights.

The Ides of March was yesterday
The Ides of March.
A date most of us have learned. Thanks to a long-dead playwright. William Shakespeare. Who ensured the world would remember this day as the one when Julius Caesar, the imperial ruler of Rome, was assassinated.
Armistice Veterans Day
It was on the 11th hour of the 11th month in 1918 that “The Great War” ended. Thaw was what the he first World War (no one expected the second- but they should have) was called that back then. It’s the name my father learned, too- and it was among the last sanctioned battles in which my grandfather (my mother’s father) was a participant.

You know, we write these dates, never really considering that they are not quite as descriptive as we think. Because the date to which I refer is not five years from now, but 95 years ago.

An auspicious day. Today is the birthday of someone who has made a big difference in my life. I met Sam 39 years ago. He was a young man then (and I was a kid). We made great things together. And, I’m honored to have him as a friend.
