I had plenty of time to read over the 4th of July weekend. Given the fact that there were no (safe) barbeques, no reason to violate my health by seeking out firework displays, or the like.

Free at last! Finally, Free at last!
So, we have been released from pandemonium. (You know, house arrest. For us, here in Northern Virginia- that was this past Friday.)

OK. Today is the day for the WayBack Machine. And, that will be true for a whole bunch of reasons.
Unsafe at any speed?
Cars (as practical transportation) have been around for a century now. And, since the 1960’s, we have been working to make our cars safer for us to drive. Of course, some vendors are less than reputable (Volkswagen and Takata Airbags come to mind), but generally our cars have been loaded with safety features- like air bags, non-skid brakes, etc.
From the minds of babes?
It’s amazing what some kids can do. If you ever meandered the Westinghouse Science Fair floor (now the Intel Science Fair), with the best of 50 states’ high school ideas, you know what I mean. Sometimes, those things really make a difference in our world.
The Gaps Remain…
I live in a fairly affluent section of America. Our high school is the largest in the Commonwealth, with 3400. With a wide range of aptitudes and ambitions. Many of our graduates attend the Ivies (and the elite state schools like Michigan, Virginia, etc.)… and some are recent (legal and illegal) immigrants lacking formal schooling and/or a foundation in English. Some are among the 1%… both at the top and bottom of the spectrum.
