I am sure you all know that I am not really a fan of country music. Oh, sure, I got sucked into the genre living in Charlottesville. (Thank you, Bellamy Brothers, for my theme song- “He’s an old hippy and don’t know what to do….”)

What Mom Eats?
This new piece of scientific data may be very traumatic for parents. Or, maybe these results are not translatable from mice to humans, so it’s just a tidbit to share. To be honest, the underlying facts are not totally new- because other research has indicated that dysfunctional immune responses and microbiome (the bacterial population in the gut) composition are related to ASD (autism spectrum disorders).
College Tuition…
Well, I am about to divulge some dirty little secrets about college education. In particular, how the relatively affluent and the downright rich have always received hidden benefits.
A way to honor one of our Presidents
So, it’s President’s Day. One of those newfangled holidays I detest. I would prefer following the protocol of old, honoring Lincoln on the 12th and Washington on the 22nd. (NOTE: I currently reside in Alexandria, which considers the 22nd of February a local and personal holiday for its native son.) But, given that America has decided that we must venerate our presidents today, let’s pick on Thomas Jefferson, instead- and do Washington later this week on the 22nd.
UVA Progress?
Oops. UVA is back in the news again. A year later. (I last reported on the UVA shenanigans in August of last year.) For a few reasons. It seems that Helen Dragas, while remaining on the board, will not be the Rector comes 30 June. The first black Rector of the University, George K. Martin, will take her place on 1 July 2013. Mr. Martin is an attorney with McGuireWoods, one of the most prominent of Virginia Law firms, where he manages the Richmond (and headquarters) office. While he does practice law (corporate), he has been intimately involved in the administration of the firm, which will hopefully put him in great stead to take the reins of the UVa Board.
A Codicil to the UVA Saga
So, there’s even more information we can learn from the Teresa Sullivan situation. (There was a four part series on management lessons we can draw upon from the UVA/Sullivan fiasco that started on 16 July.) It seems that the Virginia governor has learned something, too. That it’s high time that the Board of Visitors for UVA- as well as the other state universities (George Mason, Virginia Polytech, James Madison, and William & Mary), plus a slew of state colleges- to be populated with educators!
