Founder Success?

Over the decades, I’ve started a fair number of firms.  I’m not going to count the ones I started before I was 18, since they were what I would call solopreneurial ventures.  Businesses started to provide me the money I needed to live.  I had no desire to create an enterprise, one that would hire employees and make a lasting impression upon the world.

A fifth way?

Over the years, we’ve considered raising money from VC, going public, or simply bootstrapping.  To be honest, the most frequent process we’ve started new companies has been bootstrapping.  In so doing, we maintained total control of the firms.  And, when we finally exceeded our ability to grow the firm (or in more than a few cases, proved our concept and no longer had the desire to run the firm), we’ve sold the entity to others.

And you thought Vulture Capitalists were bad?

I have been blessed with working with a variety of clients over the years- companies included on the Fortune 50, Fortune 500, Fortune 5000, WhoHasAFortune?, and the  Inc5000, among other entities. I’ve also worked with and for venture capital and private equity firms, helping them determine if an investment is the proper fit.  (That process is typically called ‘due diligence’.)

Boards…

I wrote recently about a new type of company, and have discussed the considerations for startups, as well as different sorts of company structures.  (You can search the index for LLC, S, etc. to find more resources.)  As part of the discussion of “B” entities, I alluded to the function of a Board of Directors.
