Disruptive Technology- real or imagined?

We all have heard it. Beware the disruptive technology that will change the way things happen in this world. But, having developed more than my share of new innovations, I can guarantee you that the world does NOT beat down the doors of those with better mousetraps.

Wages and Profits

It’s time to review the facts again.  Because it’s reporting season- when companies let us know how profitable they’ve been- and how much we should reward the CEO’s who (they want us to believe) are solely responsible for this situation.   Yet, these same CEO’s seem to get rewards even if the results are poor. So, before I switch gears, let me just say I look forward to the promised regulations that will require companies to publish performance gains AND CEO pay increases side by side.

Teenage Employment

So, I was examining some publications from UVa recently and found one really interesting. Up until I realized it was really from the gin mill run by Rick Berman. (I‘ve written about Rick Berman and his Employment Policies Institute . But, most of the time, the articles (biased and conclusions developed BEFORE the research is completed) are written by a different author. As such, I kept reading- and now will share them with you. I will be editorializing at points- but, as opposed to Berman’s minions, I will make sure you know when, where, and why.)

Living Wages. The Very Bottom Line.

Here in the DC area, we are about to engage in a new kind of experiment.  The minimum wage in the Maryland suburbs is going up to $ 11.50 an hour.  As it will be in the city of DC.  But, in Northern Virginia, the minimum wage will be the Federally mandated one of $7.25.  Do you really think the jobs will leave the northern suburbs and move to Virginia?

Living Wages- Take 3

So, we’ve talked (this is the 3rd part in the daily series about current economics) about who is funding the US treasury.  Mostly workers, which surprised most of you.  Mostly the poor and the middle class, which clearly confounded you.  (Remember- it’s payroll taxes that provide about 45% of the federal take, and the income taxes of the non-rich provide another 15% of the federal take.  The rich (top 10%) provide 30% of the annual federal receipts via income taxes and corporations finish off the totals by contributing about 10%.)

Our Economy Needs Entrepreneurs

OK.  Here I go again.  I’m going to tick off a few of you with my discussion of small business.. The facts are that our government has no clue that not all “small” business are the same, nor do they understand that lifestyle businesses are not really small businesses. Yet, they produce economic policies assuming the contrary. And, because of that our national economy suffers.
