What you really need- even if you don’t know it yet.

We all have big goals when we start businesses.  We want to grow our company, if we are an entrepreneur; if we are a solopreneur, then we want to be able to do what we want- and have enough money and time to do so.

Given these goals, it’s also  why we need an executive assistant for your business.  When and if we find the right one, our office will run smoothly, and so will any interactions between our work, our family, social obligations- and the rest of our lives.

Virtual Assistant

Several years ago, I was setting up a program with my mentor that would train such “perfect” assistants.  That program never quite made it out of the design stage- because we each had different visions of the end result- and neither of us would proceed without the other’s total involvement.  (However,  our schema were used as the model for the temporary CFO, CTO, CEO, and COO services my firm provides.  The same attitudes and philosophies- just  at much higher level of skills and services.)

But, Arthur and I clearly knew- and agreed upon- what characteristics those individuals should manifest.   And, since I think we all need such individuals, here’s the list to consider when you are evaluating candidates.

The Perfect Assistant

  1. They want to serve your company, your organization- but most importantly, you.  (As I said, it’s  how we work with our clients, when we are serving as CFO, COO, or CTO).  Their goals are YOUR goals.   As far as I am concerned, this is the primary factor in choosing an assistant or someone to work with you as COO, CFO, etc.
  2. For them to succeed, they need expertise. Not only the skills necessary to accomplish a task, but to understand what it is that is really desired.  These folks keep studying and learning as they continue their liaison with you.   It’s how they will be able to anticipate your needs- and ensure you accomplish your goals.
  3. Your Outlook Calendar will be perfect. That means meetings, appointments, telephone reminders- even personal commitments.   And, this information is available on all your devices- and theirs.
  4. Given that your calendaring is being effected properly, it means they will say “no” to certain invitations (demands), as well. They won’t let you get overcommitted.  Something you- and I- are so willing to do to ourselves.
  5. It also means they set up a system. A system to insure things get finished, things are monitored, and the projects and tasks fit into the overall picture of you- and your business.
  6. Finally, they know they work for you. And, that means they keep information personal and restrict access, as necessary.

What this means is that you- and your team, if you have one (you should)- will be able to communicate issues with your team and your stakeholders.  And, these interactions will happen in real time.

    1. Jenn:
Maybe you should consider a virtual assistant. You will still be working alone- but all those dangling things that never seem to get done will be accomplished.
      And, thanks for the comment.
